I am native of Portsmouth, VA, who grew up in the Cavalier Manor neighborhood and graduated from Manor High School in  1974.  I attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina on a basketball scholarship before earning degrees in health sciences from John Tyler Community College and criminal justice from Norfolk State University.

My law enforcement career started as a Trooper when I was accepted into the Virginia State Police Academy.  From there I began my career in federal law enforcement as a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  I spent twenty-two (22) of my years in law enforcement with the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).  After several years of working with the Department of Justice in Washington, I was ready to come back home.

Retiring in 2012, I began teaching at John Tyler Community College and Tidewater Community College.

Now I’ve come full circle in my life as I begin Sheriff of Portsmouth.  “Portsmouth has always been home for me. I really need Portsmouth, and I think Portsmouth really needs me.”
